- The Mindset Shift -

MINDSET Is Not What You've Been Told!

Mindset is not something you can cultivate or change simply by reading stories of successful people, listening to self-help audio programs or attending conferences every year.

And deep down, you already know this.

The funny thing about our conscious mind is that when you go past its empty talk and constant excuses you see plain and clear that it doesn't really have the power to change anything about your life!

Your life is THE EXACT RESULT of the decisions you yourself have made a long time ago, maybe even as a child, and those decisions reside and govern your life from the hidden realm of your unconscious mind.

Consequently, REAL CHANGE IS ONLY POSSIBLE WHEN YOU CAN GET YOUR UNCONSCIOUS MIND ONBOARD!

The 4,000-Year+ Secret Hidden In Plain Sight

How & WHY Hypnosis-Powered Coaching Works

Hypnosis is a really misunderstood phenomenon that’s much more commonplace than most people realize.

Hollywood -and Vegas’ stage hypnotists- are to blame for the fact that most people think of hypnosis like this scary “mind control” situation where someone with psychic powers impose their will over an unsuspecting person, making them do whatever they want.

This scenario looks great on the big screen, and sells tickets for stage hypnotists and street performers… but nothing can be further from the truth when it comes to how hypnosis actually works.

The word “Hypnosis” —derived from the Greek “hypnos”, sleep— is, all of itself, a really misleading term!

The term was introduced in the English language in the 1840s by Scottish surgeon James Braid to describe the particular state of the nervous system during trance, that he thought similar —but not identical— to that present during normal sleep.

Unfortunately, in spite of many practitioners' efforts to the contrary, "hypnosis"  ended up becoming the official term to refer to a particular state of mind –and the associated psycho-physiological phenomena– that’s not only NOT related to sleep at all…

But also happens to occur much more frequently during the waking state and with eyes wide open!

Hypnotic trance, for lack of a better word, is a state of consciousness we all routinely and naturally fall into during our daily lives!

Have you ever driven home and once you’re there you realize you don’t remember the last 2 hours on the road?

That’s a hypnotic trance.

Have you been so engulfed in a movie that everything around you seemed to fade out, and you didn’t even hear when someone was calling you from the other room?

That’s also a classic example of hypnotic trance.

What about when you find yourself deeply absorbed by the act of reading a good book?

After devouring the last 20 pages, can you really remember having glanced your eyes over the printed letters on the page... or the act of turning pages with your hand?"

No, of course you can’t, because you were deep into a hypnotic trance!

As you can see, hypnosis is not a scary mind-control trick that a few unfortunate souls might have been victim to; it’s a NATURAL, SAFE phenomena we are all familiar with.

Hypnosis, if I am to dare a definition, is a state of consciousness characterized by FOCUSED ATTENTION, ENGAGED IMAGINATION and HEIGHTENED RECEPTIVITY TO SUGGESTION.

And even when we don’t usually think of hypnosis without an “hypnotist” in the picture, the vast majority of hypnotic trances we all have experienced in our lives have been self-induced

As a matter of fact, many experts –myself included– believe that ALL HYPNOSIS is SELF-HYPNOSIS, since it’s ALWAYS the subject’s imagination and focused attention that produces and sustains the trance!

When we see hypnosis from this new perspective, we immediately understand that this is not a new phenomenon, but rather something that has been part of the human experience from the origin of time.

The term “hypnosis” is just a relatively modern –and rather misleading, as you know by now– label for an old experience that was cultivated for thousands of years through a rich variety of rituals and religious practices in every corner of the globe.

That’s why many experts prefer the term “trance” instead of “hypnosis”.

Let’s be honest: when we hear the word “hypnosis” usually one of two images come to mind:

The man in the black suit swinging a pendulum… or the stage hypnotist convincing someone he’s a chicken.

But when say "trance" instead, our perspective immediately changes and becomes enriched, allowing us to understand that practices that on the surface appear as diverse and different as:

  • Religious ceremonies
  • Shamanic rituals
  • Meditation
  • Out-of-body experiences
  • Extrasensory perception
  • Deep states of flow
  • Ecstatic dance
  • Sensory deprivation
  • Lucid dreaming
  • Chanting and mantras
  • Drumming circles
  • Certain forms of prayer
  • Holotropic breathwork
  • Psychedelic experiences
  • Transcendental states during extreme sports
  • Yoga Nidra
  • Binaural beats-induced altered states
  • Sufi whirling
  • Vision quests
  • Sweat lodge ceremonies
  • Fasting-induced altered states
  • Tai Chi and Qi Gong practices

…and many other ancient practices are, in fact, all trance inducing practices!

But what was the final goal?

Why did all of these ancient practices go into the trouble of developing all these complicated protocols and rituals…

...simply to make sure participants could attain an altered state of consciousness akin to what we now call “hypnotic trance”?

If you were to take the time to study these traditions, you’d certainly understand that ALL OF THEM shared the same underlying purpose, even if expressed in different ways:

TO PRODUCE DEEP, LASTING, POSITIVE CHANGE INSIDE THE INDIVIDUAL.

In religious terminology, this process of deep inner change is usually called “self-realization” or “enlightenment”.

In more modern terms, we could call it CONTINUOUS SELF-IMPROVEMENT (Kaizen).

But here’s the crux of the question:

HOW COME all these ancient cultures and religious practices, originated in completely different historical contexts, times and geographical points of the planet…

DID ALL AGREE that provoking a state of trance was A NECESSITY for real change work?

That’s an answer that more than 150 years of serious scientific study of the hypnotic phenomena can help us approach…

I could talk about these things for hours on end, but out of respect for your time I’ll give you just the summary here:

We have 2 minds:

  • A superficial, intellectual, masculine, “adult”, "conscious mind" that’s in charge of carrying out our day-to-day tasks.

This is the mind we use to talk, engage in conversation and discussion, study, do our homework, work, and do everything else we do while we’re in the waking state.

  • A deep, Emotional, feminine, “child”, "unconscious mind" that’s in charge of managing everything that happens “under the threshold of consciousness”, including those biological processes and mechanisms vital to our existence that we call “involuntary”, such as our blood pressure, metabolism, body temperature, and so on.

The image of an iceberg, with 95% of its mass submerged under water, is a great way to visualize the disproportionate size and power of the deep, unconscious mind when compared to the superficial, conscious mind.

But that disproportionate power doesn’t refer only to the bodily processes the unconscious mind masterfully controls and manages through its “involuntary” mechanisms… it extends to the realm of our psyche as well!

If we were to use an analogy from the world of computers, where the “hardware” of the physical computer itself is our human body…

The unconscious mind would be the Operating System: the main SYSTEM SOFTWARE of the computer, which is THE ONLY ONE that has direct access to every resource of the machine.

The Operating System (our unconscious mind) is the one that decides WHAT software application will run and WHEN... and also what specific resources of the machine this application will be given access to!

The conscious mind in this analogy is just a user-level software like Word, Excel, or Photoshop.

Prima facie, Photoshop, or the word processor you use every day, might seem to be THE MOST IMPORTANT program in your computer. After all, that's the piece of software that you use every day to do your work!

Just like most users, you really don’t know much about your computer’s operating system.

You might have heard that it's in there somewhere, running stuff behind the scenes…  but you have never really seen it.

You really don’t know what it’s supposed to do, and whatever it is, it doesn't seem of particular significance to your daily life, so you just ignore it.

But if you’re a computer technician, you'd know that your precious Photoshop, Word and all the other programs you cherish so much, are pretty insignificant in the context of the system as a whole.

They have to ask permission from the OS to access memory, read from disk, or do anything else they need to do…

Not only that, but the Operating System actually creates a “sandbox” in a region of memory it itself decides, so that the program in question can run safely without affecting any other program or process in the system... and even assigns to it a small portion of the resources of the machine.

But for the program that’s running, that small pool of resources assigned to it by the Operating System is their entire world... it cannot suspect that the REAL machine is THOUSANDS OF TIMES more powerful than their little sandbox!

In the world of computers, if you want to RADICALLY INCREASE your access to the hardware resources, there is no doubt that you’ll need to negotiate these resources with the Operating System.

It’d be unthinkable that a user-level program could gain access to hardware resources without passing through, and getting authorized by, the Operating System.

Now you understand WHY getting access to a trance state IS A MUST if you want real, lasting change.

Real change requires access to more inner resources!

Without gaining access to new resources you didn’t have access before, change becomes impossible.

These new resources already exist right inside you, but to get access to them, and especially if you want PERMANENT ACCESS, you must negotiate this access with the manager of the System: your unconscious mind.

The problem is, of course, that we don’t have direct access to our unconscious mind, just like you don’t have direct access to your computer’s Operating System.

It’d be really dangerous if an untrained user were to be allowed to mess with the Operating System’s low level access to hardware resources!

So, in practice, as a user you are only able to tweak a few settings of the OS that are given to you to tweak, and you can only do so through a user-level program interface…

You have NO DIRECT ACCESS to the Operating System of the machine!

When it comes to your two minds, something similar is true:

You usually don’t have direct access to your unconscious mind!

You must go through your conscious mind, which acts as a guard, and a “bouncer” of sorts.

Its work is to make sure that nothing potentially harmful ever reaches your unconscious mind.

But as your conscious mind is much weaker and simpler than your unconscious mind, its vigilance it’s quite ineffective, and it can be easily bypassed.

That’s where hypnosis comes in:

You can think of hypnosis as a “hacking” technique; a way to outsmart your conscious mind’s vigilance, to get to communicate directly with your unconscious mind in order to:

  1. Negotiate access to new resources, or

  2.  Make changes in some program that’s being automatically run by your unconscious mind (i.e. habits, phobias, anxiety, etc)

We’re, of course, talking about the therapeutic, positive use of such “mind hacking” techniques here.

But it is important for you to know that these same techniques –hypnotic language, NLP, etc– can, and ARE, being deployed all the time in fields such as marketing, advertising, negotiation, etc. to persuade people to make decisions that are not always in their best interest.

Interestingly, we ourselves also use our influence to make a big deal of harm to others around us, and to ourselves, even without realizing it.

That’s why becoming aware of these things is so important!

But what about coaching?

Can coaching be combined with hypnosis?

As we saw previously, there is ZERO chance of achieving real, lasting change without accessing the resources under the custody of your unconscious mind

By this definition, if coaching is about producing real change, then it not only CAN be combined with hypnosis…

IT MUST BE, IN ORDER TO PRODUCE REAL, DEEP, LASTING POSITIVE CHANGE!

Now, I want to clarify that we’re talking here about  "hypnosis" and “hypnotic trance” from the broader perspective of “trance inducing practices”.

Even if I do think that every coach would greatly benefit (and benefit their clients) from learning hypnosis, I don’t mean to say that a coach that’s not a trained hypnotherapist is, inevitably, not a good coach.

If they deliver TRANSFORMATION for their clients, then THEY ARE GOOD!

But again: if they deliver real, lasting, positive change in the life of their clients, there is something they’re doing that allows them to introduce such changes in their clients’ unconscious mind…

So by definition, they’re practicing hypnosis even if they themselves don’t realize it!

A Final Word on “Hypnosis”, “Hypnotherapy”, and “Hypnotic-Powered Change Work” (Hypno-Coaching)

By now you have a really good idea of what “hypnosis” and “hypnotic trance” mean in a practical sense.

The word “hypnotherapy” refers to the use of hypnosis in the context of therapy, this is, with therapeutic purposes.

It might sound obvious, but even if all hypnotherapists are hypnotists... not all hypnotists are hypnotherapists!

PURPOSE and INTENTION make all the difference in the world!

I personally call “Hypnotic-Powered Change Work”  –or“Hypno-Coaching”, for shortthe practice of using hypnosis and hypnotherapy techniques in the context of Mindset Change and Continuous Self-Improvement.

This is quite different from Hypnotherapy, because hypnotherapy is mostly focused on helping people:

  1. Overcome debilitating emotions such as anxiety, depression, phobias, emotional pain, guilt, etc. OR

  2. Get rid of harmful habits and behaviors like overeating, smoking, gambling, nail-picking, and many others.

In all of these cases there is something we want to overcome, get rid of, free ourselves from.

The main focus of therapy is, thus, on fixing, repairing something that's already present in our lives.

Hypnotherapy is incredibly useful, and I have used countless times on myself and my clients to get unstuck, to become free of undesirable habits and emotions that are holding us back.

Coaching, however, is TRANSFORMATIONAL.

And YES, Transformation will ALWAYS require identifying things inside us that need to change… and freeing ourselves from them. So there is, for sure, some overlap.

But the FOCUS of coaching is NOT on the extra baggage we need to get rid of... but on the new, wonderful resources we’re working to unlock.

It might seem like a subtle difference, but believe me, it’s a HUGE one!

When we engage the help of a coach, we’re not just trying to square a few rough corners that are bothering us so that we can go right back to our lives, as fast as possible...

Instead, we’re working to build, piece by piece, a completely new, far superior version of ourselves!

I picture going to therapy like that brief stop the Formula 1 driver makes to get the needed extra fuel and add some air to the tires just to get back to the track as fast as humanly possible…

But if we’re talking coaching, he would be, to the stupefaction of everybody around him, trashing the helmet and leaving the car behind, never to be seen again…

...to jump into a fighter jet having only quickly skimmed over the pilot manual on their way there!

Such is the difference between the attitude and mindset of a client that needs therapy counseling, and someone who’s ready for real, life-altering coaching.

If you feel you’re ready to do the best work of your life, BECOME WHO YOU’RE CALLED TO BE, and leave a lasting contribution to the world –and, who knows, maybe make a dent in the Universe along the way, as Steve Jobs used to say

– LET’S TALK.
